The disappointment of missing out on watching Odell Beckham Jr. was quickly replaced by excitement for Grand Canyon University (GCU) junior Julia McNichol. Alongside her fellow junior Arikka Graves, they were among nearly 100 GCU students thrilled to have their photograph taken with social media sensation Josh Richards.
McNichol and Graves expressed their excitement after securing a coveted photo with Richards, highlighting the uniqueness of having such an event on campus.
Star-Studded Basketball Game
GCU hosted a star-studded basketball game, the Celebrity Sweat Slam Jam, as part of the Final Four festivities. The event featured celebrities like Kyler Murray, Terrell Owens, Robert Griffin III, and Shawn Marion.
Graves praised the university’s decision to host such an event, especially as it provided entertainment for students before their spring semester finals. The previous day, students had enjoyed watching GCU senior standout Gabe McGlothan win the King’s Hawaiian College Slam Dunk Championship, adding to the excitement on campus.
Support for Military and First Responders
The Slam Jam, presented by Talking Stick Resort and Casino, aimed to support military, veterans, and first responders. The GCU community rallied around the event, treating it like a home game for the Lopes men’s basketball team.
Student Enthusiasm
The student turnout for the event was impressive, with a lengthy line forming more than an hour before the doors opened. The Thundering Herd Pep Band and Spirit Squad added to the pregame excitement, creating a lively atmosphere in the arena.
Despite Odell Beckham Jr.’s absence, students remained enthusiastic, showing support for the event’s cause and enjoying the presence of other celebrities. Murray, who participated as a coach, expressed his pleasure at being part of the community event and praised the fun atmosphere.
Reflections and Reactions
For many students, the event provided a unique opportunity to interact with pro football players and other celebrities in person, a rarity for a university without a football program. Freshman Brayden Stenner appreciated seeing iconic figures like Kyler Murray in person and acknowledged the significance of the occasion.
Game Highlights
Team RGIII/OBJ emerged victorious over Team Shawn Marion/Terrell Owens with a score of 108-99. Despite the competitive nature of the game, it was clear that the event was about more than just basketball – it was a chance for students to come together, support a worthy cause, and enjoy a memorable evening of entertainment.
