On Wednesday, Slovakia’s Prime Minister Robert Fico was shot multiple times in Handlova, a town approximately 150 kilometers northeast of Bratislava. The shooting occurred in front of the local House of Culture, where Fico was scheduled to meet with supporters.
Following the attack, he was rushed to Handlova hospital. Despite the severity of his injuries, Fico was conscious upon arrival, and medical personnel managed to stabilize his vital signs. However, government sources cited by AFP indicate that his condition remains life-threatening.
Parliamentary Reaction and Police Action
The news of the shooting was confirmed by Lubos Blaha, the deputy speaker of parliament, who adjourned the parliamentary session indefinitely, as reported by the Slovak TASR news agency.
According to a Reuters witness, several shots were heard after Fico’s meeting, leading to the swift detention of a suspect by the police. Emergency services dispatched a helicopter to Handlova, and the area has since been cordoned off by law enforcement.
A reporter from the daily newspaper Dennik N noted that Fico was seen being hurriedly transported by rescuers to a vehicle following the gunfire.
International Condemnation and Support
The attack on Prime Minister Fico has elicited strong reactions from international leaders. Slovak President Zuzana Caputova expressed her “utter shock” and extended her prayers for Fico and his family.
European Union head Ursula von der Leyen condemned the “vile attack,” emphasizing that such violence undermines democracy.
NATO head Jens Stoltenberg, US President Joe Biden, and UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak also conveyed their shock and prayers for Fico’s recovery. Biden additionally offered assistance through the US embassy in Slovakia.
Political Landscape and Fico’s Career
Robert Fico, who reclaimed the Prime Minister position last year for the fourth time, has had a fluctuating political career.
Known for his ability to navigate Slovakia’s shifting political landscape, he has alternated between pro-European stances and nationalistic positions, sometimes opposing EU and US policies.
This adaptability has been a hallmark of his leadership, reflecting his responsiveness to public sentiment and evolving political dynamics.
Aftermath and Broader Impact
In the wake of the shooting, Slovakia’s main opposition party has canceled a scheduled protest against government reforms concerning the public broadcaster.
This incident has not only shocked the nation but also highlighted the volatile nature of political life in Slovakia.
The swift reactions from both domestic and international figures underscore the seriousness of the attack and the widespread concern for Prime Minister Fico’s recovery. The situation remains tense as the country awaits further updates on his condition and the investigation into the shooting progresses.
