Fani Willis, the lead prosecutor in Donald Trump’s Georgia election meddling case, has won the state’s Democratic primary election.
This victory secures her bid for a second term as Fulton County District Attorney.
Willis defeated her challenger, Christian Wise, in Tuesday’s primary and will now face Republican Courtney Kramer in the November general election.
Judge Scott McAfee Secures Full Term
Judge Scott McAfee, who is presiding over Trump’s Georgia case, has also secured his first full term after being appointed to the court last year.
McAfee was appointed by Georgia Governor Brian Kemp to fill an empty seat and has now been elected directly to the bench by Atlanta-area voters in a nonpartisan judicial race.
Roles and Scrutiny in Trump Case
Both Willis and McAfee have drawn intense scrutiny due to their involvement in the high-profile criminal case against Trump. Willis’s position as the lead prosecutor has garnered significant attention, particularly after revelations about her romantic relationship with her former co-prosecutor Nathan Wade.
Wade resigned from the case after these details became public, but Willis has remained on the case. Judge McAfee denied requests from Trump’s lawyers to have her removed.
The Georgia Court of Appeals is currently reviewing whether to overturn McAfee’s ruling, potentially delaying the trial until after the presidential election.
General Election Challenges
In the upcoming November 5 general election, Willis will face Courtney Kramer, a Republican lawyer who interned in the Trump White House and was accused of involvement in efforts to overturn Georgia’s 2020 election results.
Kramer is expected to focus her campaign on criticizing Willis’s handling of the Trump case and the allegations of misconduct related to Willis’s relationship with Wade.
However, Kramer faces a challenging campaign in Fulton County, a Democratic stronghold that includes Atlanta.
Ongoing Investigations and Public Support
Republicans in Georgia and Washington have launched investigations into Willis and her office, adding to the controversy surrounding her.
Despite these challenges, Willis has called for public support. “I need people around the country to support me big and small, to think that we are going to be a country that still believes in the rule of law,” she said on The Rachel Maddow Show. “We are not going to allow people to be attacked while they do their job.”
As the legal and political battles continue, the outcome of the November election will be closely watched.
