The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) has confirmed that an investigation has been opened regarding the death of actor Matthew Perry. Known for his iconic role in the TV sitcom Friends, Perry tragically passed away in October.
The cause of death was attributed to the “acute effects of ketamine,” according to medical officials. This probe, in partnership with the Drug Enforcement Agency and the US Postal Inspection Service, seeks to uncover how Perry came into possession of the ketamine found in his system.
Circumstances of Death
Matthew Perry was discovered unresponsive in the pool of his Los Angeles residence on October 28. Despite efforts, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Subsequent examinations by the LA County medical examiner’s office revealed “high levels of ketamine” in his post-mortem blood analysis. The death was classified as an accident, with drowning noted as a contributing factor. This tragic outcome raises questions about the series of events leading to his untimely death.
Contributing Factors
Senior deputy medical examiner Raffi Djabourian provided further insights into Perry’s death, identifying additional contributing factors. Coronary artery disease and the effects of buprenorphine, a medication for opioid use disorder, were significant.
Djabourian explained, “Drowning contributes due to the likelihood of submersion into the pool as he lapsed into unconsciousness; coronary artery disease contributes due to exacerbation of ketamine induced myocardial effects on the heart.” These findings highlight the complex interplay of health issues that Perry faced at the time.
Ketamine Treatments and Mental Health
At the time of his death, Perry was undergoing medically supervised ketamine treatments for depression and anxiety. The report notes that his last treatment occurred a week and a half before his death.
This detail is crucial, as it underscores the efforts Perry was making to manage his mental health challenges. However, it also raises concerns about the timing and management of these treatments in relation to his overall health.
A Struggle with Addiction
Matthew Perry’s battle with addiction to painkillers and alcohol was well-documented. At the height of his fame, he frequently attended rehabilitation clinics. In a revealing 2016 interview with BBC Radio 2, Perry admitted he could not remember three years of filming Friends due to his substance abuse issues.
His memoir further details his journey, stating that he had been mostly sober since 2001, “save for about 60 or 70 mishaps.” Perry’s story is a poignant reminder of the ongoing struggles many face in their efforts to overcome addiction.
