Kansas City Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker has achieved remarkable success in his NFL career.
Drafted in the seventh round by the Carolina Panthers in 2017 from Georgia Tech, Butker has played a crucial role in helping the Chiefs secure three Super Bowl titles.
In the 2023 season, he achieved a career-high, making 94.3% of his field goals during the regular season and going 11-for-11 in the postseason.
Controversial Commencement Address
Butker recently delivered a controversial commencement address at Benedictine College, a liberal arts institution in Atchison, Kansas.
The college, which previously forced out gay basketball player Jallen Messersmith for displaying a rainbow flag, seemed to align with Butker’s conservative views. His speech included incendiary comments about Covid-19 and President Biden, which quickly drew attention and criticism.
Views on Women’s Roles
In his speech, Butker expressed traditional views on women’s roles, stating, “I think it is you, the women, who have had the most diabolic lies told to you.
Some of you may go on to lead successful careers in the world but I would venture to guess that the majority of you are most excited about your marriage and the children you will bring into this world.” He praised his wife, Isabelle, for embracing her role as a homemaker, attributing much of his success to her support.
Critique of Modern Values
Butker criticized what he called the “church of nice,” condemning societal pressures to conform to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
He stated, “The world around us says that we should keep our beliefs to ourselves whenever they go against the tyranny of diversity, equity and inclusion. We fear speaking truth, because now, unfortunately, truth is in the minority.” His remarks highlighted his opposition to current social trends and values.
Comments on Pride Month
Butker also took aim at Pride Month, which celebrates LGBTQ+ pride in June.
He distinguished it from what he considers true pride, saying, “Not the deadly sins sort of Pride that has an entire month dedicated to it, but the true God-centered pride that is cooperating with the holy ghost to glorify him.”
His comments have sparked significant backlash, reflecting the divisive nature of his views.
Butker has every right to voice his opinions, but he must also face the criticism that comes with them.
His address at Benedictine College has ignited a heated debate, showcasing the complex relationship between public figures and their personal beliefs.
